FAQ

SHREDDERS

Your cross-cut or micro-cut shredder is a machine with moving parts. Just like a car engine needs oil to keep the gears and moving parts lubricated, your shredder also needs to be kept lubricated to condition the cutters and extend the life of your machine. Strip cut shredders do not need oiling.

Oiling your shredder is a very quick and simple process. For detailed step by step instructions click here.

What types of materials can I shred?

Most Fellowes shredders handle paper, credit cards, CDs/DVDs, and staples/paper clips depending on the model. Always check your shredder’s manual for specific limits.

How much paper can I shred at once?

Sheet capacity varies by model, typically 5–20 sheets per pass. Overloading can jam the machine.

What do I do if the shredder jams?

  • Turn off and unplug the shredder.
  • Reverse the shredder to try to clear the jam.
  • Gently remove stuck paper using tweezers or pliers if needed.
  • For persistent jams, refer to your user manual.

How do I maintain my shredder?

  • Oil the cutting blades regularly (every month or as recommended).
  • Empty the bin when full.
  • Avoid shredding prohibited items (like thick cardboard or metal objects).

How do I know if my shredder needs oiling?

If the shredder runs slower than usual, makes unusual noises, or produces shredded strips that stick together, it’s time to lubricate the blades.

Why does my shredder keep stopping?

  • Overheating due to excessive use
  • Jammed paper
  • Bin not inserted correctly
  • Safety switch activated

Turn off, unplug, and check for these issues before restarting.
